All applicants must submit:
1 Signed application (domestic or international) for admission to the Graduate School. (Submit to Graduate School)
2 Statement of Personal Goals (Submit to Physics & Astronomy Department)
3 Resume or Vitae (Submit to Physics & Astronomy Department)
4 Two official transcripts (seal bearing) transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate work. (Submit to Graduate School)
5 Three letters of recommendation by professors acquainted with the applicant's work. -No special form required. (Submit to
Physics & Astronomy Department)
GRE scores are not required, however students are encouraged to submit their GRE scores. The Physics Subject test scores are
particularly useful. A Physics Subject score of 60th percentile or higher submitted before first enrollment satisfies the
qualifying examination requirement for the PhD.
TOEFL scores or other English tests conducted under American auspices. (For the paper-based TOEFL minimum scores of 53 in
each category is required; for the computer-based TOEFL minimum scores of 20 in each category and 4.0 essay are required.).*
Or IELTS score with a minimum band score 5.5. with no score below 5.0.
All international applicants must also submit:
Financial Resource Statement Form: Proof of adequate financial resources (at least $16,628 for the 2003-2004 academic year)
is required in order for the University to issue the necessary F1 or J1 immegration documents for admitted students. The
"financial resource statement" portion of the application must be completed by all applicants. All fellowship and
assistantship applicants must complete this section even if no personal funds are available. Self supporting students must
complete this section. Sponsored students also need to have their sponsors complete the "Sponsor's Affidavit." Documentaion
for self-supporting and sponsored students must be provided in the form of an original bank statement.
Students for whom English is not their native language must achieve a score of at least 50 on the TSE in order to be
eligible for a Teaching Assistantship

The University of Kansas has a number of fellowship opportunities for doctoral study. Exceptional students whose applications
(complete with reference letters) are received by December 15 will be considered for fellowship nominations. These
opportunities include the Madison and Lila Self Fellowship and the Honors/First Year Fellowship. Minority students may also
apply for the Melik Graduate Fellowships. The Department of Physics and Astronomy has a graduate fellowship endowed by the
family of former student John Lowry. The Lowry Graduate Fellowship is awarded to outstanding graduate students for up to four
years during their graduate studies. Scores on the general GRE exam are required for fellowship consideration.
