Thank you for your interest in Columbia University for graduate study in physics. For more information the Physics graduate program, I encourage you to visit the Physics Department website at http://columbia-physics.net. The application deadline for admission in September 2006 will be January 3, 2006. The Columbia University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS) is no longer printing applications. They urge all applicants to apply on-line at their website: http://www.columbia.edu/cu/gsas. That website will be accepting applications as of mid-September 2005. The admission process in Physics is quite competitive. We require the GRE General and Physics Subject Test and the TOEFL. These tests cannot be waived, and the Physics Graduate Admissions Committee needs to receive official scores via GRE/ETS. The GRE Physics Subject Test is particularly important. The 2004 entering class was chosen from 387 applicants. The average score for admitted applicants on the GRE Physics subject test was 835. On the TOEFL, the Admissions Committee is looking for a score of 600 (250 on the computer-based exam) balanced across the three areas. The TSE is not required by Columbia. All applicants admitted to the graduate program in Physics are awarded a Faculty Fellowship which covers tuition and certain fees as well as providing a fellowship stipend and Teaching Fellow salary for living expenses. The total 12-month support for 2005-2006 in Physics is $25, 333 and support in 2006-2007 should be slightly higher. Teaching Fellows work approximately 10 hours per week during the first two years of the program teaching one 3-hour lab section for the General Physics I and II courses, grading lab reports, helping to staff the Physics Help Room, and grading lecture course examinations. >From the third year on, graduate students in Physics earn their fellowship support by serving as Graduate Research Assistants doing research with a particular faculty member and his or her research group and receiving GRA salary, tuition and certain fees from the faculty member's research funding. Also, grad students often work with a research group as a GRA during the summer between their first and second years in the program. Most graduates of the Columbia Physics program (65% or more) go on to postdoctoral positions at research universities or national labs. Some take teaching positions directly after graduation.
