[Northeastern US][D7] Tiring return flight

We went to the airport way too early for our flight. I was bored at the airport so I turned on my laptop to watch the movie "Crazy Stone" once more. "Are you insanely poor? You think US dollars just fall off the sky?" Bam...

No free food on the flight. That I expected, so I had dinner at McDonald's. However, I didn't expect no free drinks. Even water cost $2. This is unacceptable. I will never take a US Airways flight anymore. This flight was too long. My mp3 player rolled back to the very first song. I was bored by the camera's games. I used up my laptop's battery. The plane was still not going to land. How huge is the US! The seats were extremely uncomfortable, so I couldn't fall asleep. I felt so exhausted until I saw the bright hotels on Las Vegas. Apparently the airport is not far from the Strip. I could see all those familiar hotels during the landing: Luxor Hotel, MGM, Mandalay Bay... Getting out of the plane, we saw a lot of slot machines in the airport, performing all the familiar slot machine music. This is a genius design. People transferring from Las Vegas can start gambling right out of the plane, without even walking out of the airport. I wondered how many people lost all of their money here in the last minute of their trips in Las Vegas. After a 6-hour flight, we were still not home. We had to catch the next flight home so we didn't have time to play with these slot machines. Otherwise since I was too exhausted, I would have gambled $1. In case I won big money, I would stay in Las Vegas for a night. Soon the next flight took off. The resplendent hotels with the heavy traffic Strip disappeared under the clouds. 2 hours later, sweet home. Adjusted the watch for California time. The 3 hours transfered from 2008 to 2009, were so tiring.

See also:

Previous topic of this trip: [D7] Quincy Market

Other topics of this trip

[Northeastern US][D3] World Trade Center ruins

How time flies. 7 years have passed after the attacks, but I still clearly remember what happened that day. On the night of September 11, 2001 China time, I was doing manual laundry on the balcony of my high school dorm. Another student was listening to the radio and he suddenly shouted, the US was bombed. I thought he was kidding and didn't believe him until the next day a classmate brought the newspaper into the class. That day we had a politics class. The teacher commented a lot on the attacks. During lunch, the TVs in the school restaurant repeated the videos again and again. I still remember that the videotaping of the 1st plane crash was kind of an accident. They were interviewing nearby about sewers. Suddenly there's engine roaring. In no time the camera was raised to target the World Trade Center (WTC) and then boom. After the 1st crash, hundreds of cameras were targeting the WTC, so the 2nd crash was videotaped from all directions and in all sorts of views. I thought the attacks had nothing to do with me. However, facing strict visa check and careful plane boarding safety examination is a result of those attacks. When I stood in front of the ruins, imagining the tall twin towers, looking down the floor where 2700 lives were buried, I felt so close to this incident. The tour guide said he led a tour group onto the twin towers on September 9. Who knew 2 days later ...

...

Read the whole topic

Early in the morning, we went back to Manhattan. We landed on the top of the Empire State Building to view the panorama of the just-woken-up Manhattan. The construction started during the Great Depression in 1930 and finished the next year, when there was no computer. This building was the tallest building in the world until 1972, when the World Trade Center became the tallest. After the September 11 attacks, the Empire State Building became the tallest building in New York, and the 2nd tallest in the US. The tallest in the US is the Sears Tower (now renamed to Willis Tower) in Chicago.

The Empire State Building stands on the financial center of the world. It has witnessed the Great Depression last century. Now it's witnessing the new financial crisis in the 21st century. These things were treated as "modern art" by Americans.

↓↓All sorts of red posters, fliers, pokers, etc. from Chairman Mao's era↓↓

↑↑All sorts of red posters, fliers, pokers, etc. from Chairman Mao's era↑↑

It took a long time to buy the tickets and deposit our backpacks before we could finally get in. Among so many art works, I was able to appreciate only a few. Most of them really suck, in my opinion. Some steel wires were randomly put together and counted as art. On the 2nd floor, some subjectless, if not disgusting, animations were being projected on the walls with some weird noise. Man they could call that art. One thing really worth seeing was van Gogh's painting gallery. Before, I hadn't liked van Gogh's paintings much, but after this trip, his paints looked more and more amazing to me.

...

Read the whole topic
