Normal A rumor?

good(0) bad(0) views(275) comments(0)

On the Rubik's Cube page in Chinese Wikipedia, there is such a sentence:

魔術方塊與中國的華容道、法國的單身貴族(獨立鑽石棋)同被稱謂智力遊戲界的三大不可思議。

It says that Rubik's Cube, Klotski from China, and Peg solitaire from France are called "The Three Inconceivable Puzzles." However, I cannot find any English record about this. There's no such record in English Wikipedia. Although this record also appears on the page of "Puzzle" and the page of "Peg solitaire" in Chinese Wikipedia, it doesn't exist on these pages in English Wikipedia. I googled "three inconceivable puzzles", "three incredible puzzles", and other similar keywords, and I got nothing related to this record. I also googled "Rubik's Cube Klotski Peg solitaire", but still I didn't get this record. Therefore, this is probably just a rumor spreading over China.

I googled the Chinese keyword "智力遊戲界的三大不可思議" and got a lot of results, one of which was "(華容道)與魔方、獨立鑽石棋一起被國外智力專家並稱為'智力遊戲界的三個不可思議'." If translated into English, it says that Klotski, Rubic's Cube, and Peg solitaire are called by foreign intelligence experts "The Three Inconceivable Puzzles." If this concept is raised by foreign experts, how come there is no English record about it? ("foreign" here means outside of China)

Prof. McWilliams is right. Never trust Wikipedia.

Normal [Movie] The Pursuit of Happyness

good(0) bad(0) views(506) comments(0)

A very touching and encouraging movie. It encourages people to work hard and never give up. It is true that life is tough and money is not easy to earn, no matter in communist China or in capitalist America, but it is also true that as long as you are not too dumb and you work hard, you'll succeed sooner or later and you'll get the money you want.

My Rubik's Cube was too tight, so I was running it randomly to make it loose while watching the movie. Coincidently the main character solved a Rubik's Cube and got an internship in the movie. Maybe one day I'll get an internship by solving a Rubik's Cube.

Normal Wonderful video game night @ Jaime's

good(0) bad(0) views(305) comments(0)

It's the first time I experience the new generation video game platform Wii. It's an amazing invention. I guess it detects the controller's position and pointing direction by multipole radiation. Besides Wii, we also played PS2 and Super Nintendo. Thank Rachel for providing all these games and thank Jaime for inviting me.

Normal The Super Salad mistake

good(0) bad(0) views(301) comments(0)

Customer: What can I have to start with?
Server: Soup or salad.
Customer: What's Super Salad?
Server: What do you mean, "Super Salad"?
Customer: Didn't you say you have a Super Salad?
Server: No, we don't have anything like that. Just plain green salad. Or you can start with tomato soup.
...

This is a practice dialogue in my ESL class textbook. I learned this dialogue with my tutor last quarter. However, today at the Olive Garden Restaurant, I made the same mistake:

I: Stuffed Chicken Marsala, please.
Server: Do you want soup or salad?
I: Super Salad? Is it free? (No way will I make the $30-haircut mistake again)
Server: Yeah. Which one do you want? Soup or salad?
I: Or? (Since I heard Super Salad, I was waiting to hear the second choice)
Server: That's it.
I: You said I have two choices. What's the choice other than Super Salad?
Server: No, no. I said you can have soup, or salad.
I: /em28/ (Suddenly remembered the dialogue in my ESL textbook)

English is hard. If I cannot pass the TOEP in June, I'm going to take one more ESL class next quarter.

Btw, the Stuffed Chicken Marsala was good.

Essence Hiking at Mount Whitney (May 11-12, 2007)

good(0) bad(0) views(1529) comments(6)

First of all, I want to thank Hao, Su, Wei C., and Hua for organizing the trip and driving.

At about 10pm on May 11, we took off for Mount Whitney -- the highest point in the contiguous United States.

We arrived at Whitney Portal, which is 8,360ft (2,548m) above sea level, at about 3:30am on May 12.

We packed food and gear up, put on hiking clothes, extended hiking poles, turned headlamps on, and then started hiking toward the summit (14,505ft or 4,421m).

It's silent and dark. The rhythmical sounds from our steps, our breath, and hiking poles hitting the rocks composed a special symphony. The crescent moon's light went through the clearance between two cliffs and, along with our headlamps, lightened the stage. What a wonderful concert!

At about 5:30am, we arrived at the Lone Pine Lake. The sun was waking up and opening his eyes.
